The Venue – Radisson Plaza Hotel at Kalamazoo Center

The 49th Annual Symposium on Bat Research will be held at the Radisson Plaza Hotel at Kalamazoo Center.  This great venue is located within easy walking distance of Downtown Kalamazoo with its wide variety of restaurants and attractions.  These  include Bell's Brewery, the Kalamazoo State Theater, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, and Heritage Guitar Center.

The Radisson has 340 rooms, each with a flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi connection, coffee maker, and working desk.  The hotel also has an indoor pool, fitness center, full-service salon and spa and wide range of restaurant options

Room Rate: $139+tax (single/double).  To take advantage of these rates, reservations must be made by September 28, 2019.    Check-in time is 4:00 PM and checkout time is 12:00 PM.

This rate is also available for three days before and after the symposium for those arriving early or staying late.  The online system can only handle reservations between the 22nd and 27th of October.  Please call the hotel to make reservations if you will be arriving early or staying late.  Room reservations may be cancelled without penalty up to 14 days prior to the start of the symposium.

Parking: Parking for hotel guests is $10.00 per night.

Alternate Accommodations

The Radisson is close to capacity.  If you cannot find rooms at the conference hotel, we suggest contacting the Comfort Inn which is about a half mile from the Radisson at 739 West Michigan Ave.  If you have a vehicle and are willing to drive, you may also try the Staybridge Suites, Delta by Marriott and the Holiday Inn Express

Getting to the Radisson Plaza Hotel

  • The Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO) is located just 6 miles away from the city.  This Airport is serviced by Delta, American Airlines, and United.  Several flights per day connect AZO with major US airports such as Detroit, Chicago and Minneapolis.  The Radisson provides a free shuttle service by appointment to and from the airport from 6:00AM to 11:30PM.  Call +1 (269) 343-3333 to reserve a space or contact the hotel using the airport courtesy phone at baggage claim.
  • Taxi, Uber, and Lyft car services are available in Kalamazoo.  Depending on your arrival time, a trip from AZO to the symposium hotel should cost $10-$15.
  • Thinking about driving?  Kalamazoo lies on Interstate 94 roughly mid-way between Chicago (150 miles) and Detroit (140 miles).

Flying into a Nearby Airport?

If you are finding difficulty in booking reasonably-priced airfare to Kalamazoo, you might consider including some ground transport to get to Kalamazoo from larger airports in the region. Note that all Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses are equipped with wi-fi.

From Grand Rapids airport (GRR)

  • Catch the #17 city bus from the Grand Rapids airport to the Woodland Mall. These depart every 30 minutes throughout the day, and the ride is ~15 minutes. Fares are US$3.50 for a one-day unlimited pass, or US$1.75 for a single ride. Grand Rapids city buses are free to students with valid school ID.
  • At the Woodland Mall stop, transfer to the #5 city bus from the Woodland Mall to Central Station. These depart every 30 minutes throughout the day, and the ride is ~30 minutes.
  • Take a Greyhound bus from Central Station to Kalamazoo. There are 4 buses per day, and the trip is ~1 hour. A one-way ticket is US$10; reserve beforehand at the Greyhound website.
  • From the Kalamazoo Greyhound station, walk ~3 city blocks (0.2 mile) to the Radisson Plaza Hotel. Alternatively, you could take an Uber for ~US$5.


From Detroit Metro Airport (DTW)

  • First, take a coach bus (the Michigan Flyer) from the airport to Blake Transit Center in Ann Arbor. These depart every 1-2 hours throughout the day, and the ride is ~50 minutes. A one-way ticket is US$12; reserve beforehand at the Michigan Flyer website.
  • Catch the #21 city bus from the Blake Transit Center (bus stop is on 4th Ave) to the Amtrak station in Ann Arbor. The bus ride is ~5 minutes, and runs every half-hour. Fare is US$1.50.
  • Take the Wolverine route on the Amtrak train from Ann Arbor to Kalamazoo. There are 3 trains per day, and the trip is ~2 hours. A one-way ticket is US$22; reserve beforehand at the Amtrak website.
  • From the Kalamazoo Amtrak station, walk ~3 city blocks (0.2 mile) to the Radisson Plaza Hotel. Alternatively, you could take an Uber for ~US$5.


From Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD)

  • From the O’Hare airport, take the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line to the Clinton Street Station. A one-way regular fare from O’Hare is US$5; the reduced rate for students is US$0.75. The ride takes ~45 minutes. Schedules are available at the CTA website.
  • Walk north on Clinton Street for 2 city blocks, then turn right onto Jackson Blvd and enter Chicago Union Station. Alternatively, an Uber from O’Hare directly to Union Station will cost ~US$35.
  • Take the Wolverine route on the Amtrak train from Chicago-Union Station to Kalamazoo. There are 4 trains per day, and the trip is ~2-2.5 hours. A one-way ticket is US$22; reserve beforehand at the Amtrak website.
  • From the Kalamazoo Amtrak station, walk ~3 city blocks (0.2 mile) to the Radisson Plaza Hotel. Alternatively, you could take an Uber for ~US$5.


From Chicago Midway Airport (MDW)

  • From the Midway airport, take the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Orange Line to the Adams Station. A one-way regular fare is US$2.50; the reduced rate for students is US$0.75. The ride takes ~30 minutes. Schedules are available at the CTA website.
  • From the Adams Street station, either walk or take a bus to Chicago Union Station.
  • Walk: Walk west on Adams St for 0.7 miles. Union Station will be on the south side of the street, at Adams and Canal.
  • Bus: You will exit the Adams Street station at the corner of Adams and Wabash. Catch the 151 bus there, heading Southbound to Union Station. You can pay the bus fare as a CTA-system transfer from the Orange Line, transfer fare is US$0.25 (US$0.15 for students).
  • Take the Wolverine route on the Amtrak train from Chicago-Union Station to Kalamazoo. There are 4 trains per day, and the trip is ~2-2.5 hours. A one-way ticket is US$22; reserve beforehand at the Amtrak website.
