October 20-23, 2021
Tempe Mission Palms Hotel and conference center
The 50th Annual North American Symposium on Bat Research will be held in Tempe, Arizona, 20-23 October, 2021, at the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel and Conference Center. After much consideration and weighing all possibilities and risks, NASBR decided to hold a reduced-attendance meeting. Our meeting will be held to standards that exceed all CDC and state recommendations for in-person gatherings. To ensure the safety of the participants, as well as reduce the fiscal risk to the Society associated with possibly cancelling a large meeting, we have certain limitations for the conference.
Reduced capacity: In order to observe social distancing within our meeting space, the Mission Palms will have to impose an attendance limit. We will be able to accommodate only 200 people.
Vaccination & Health Practices: We strongly encourage attendees to get vaccinated before attending the conference. This decreases the risk for all attendees and encourages participation if attendees know that others are vaccinated. Masks will be required while attending sessions and social distancing will be enforced for all social events and the exhibitors area.
Changes to scientific program: Given meeting space limitations and in order to minimize transit between adjacent rooms the meeting will be held in a single room with no concurrent sessions. Unfortunately, this means that only 75 oral presentations can be accommodated across the three days of the event. Thus the registration process will be different with caps on registration for presenters as well as non-presenters. Registration will be on a first-come basis and is likely to fill up quickly. If you plan to attend and/or present please do so at your earliest convenience. Registration will open on July 15th.
To minimize the risk for all attendees, we have decided to cancel the in-person poster session. We will hold a virtual poster session during Spring of 2022. There will be no Pre-conference tours, Diversity Breakfast, Lunch with Mentor, or Student Awards this year. Student presentations will be placed thematically within sessions.
Live Online Attendance: All the presentations at the conference will be available for viewing via Zoom for those unable to attend the meeting. Details on the registration process will be sent out soon.
Changes to Social Events: We will still hold the welcome reception at the Desert Botanical Garden and we have opted for an outside cocktail event on Saturday evening instead of a sit-down banquet. Both events have been planned to provide a safe environment for our members to interact.
We look forward to seeing you this October!
